Most home repair injuries come from a few avoidable mistakes.
Every time
- Turn off power at the breaker and confirm it's off with a non-contact voltage tester
- Turn off water before plumbing work
- Wear safety glasses when cutting, drilling or hammering
- Use a ladder on firm, level ground and keep three points of contact
- Never mix cleaning chemicals
- Stop if you're unsure
Older homes
Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint. Sanding or scraping can create dangerous dust; see EPA guidance before you start.
