When a pipe bursts, you need to know where to turn off the water in seconds.
Find and label
- The main water shutoff, often where the line enters the house
- Shutoff valves under sinks and behind toilets
- The electrical panel, with each breaker labeled
- The gas meter shutoff, if you have gas
Gas
If you smell gas, leave the house immediately and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don't turn lights or appliances on or off. Once gas is shut off at the meter, only the utility or a qualified pro should turn it back on.
